Retromobile – Paris’ premier Classic Car Show. Deputy Editor, James Ball, flew over to spend two days soaking up the atmosphere.
Arriving in Paris I was greeted by Morgan-owner, MOG contributor and Paris-resident, Douglas Hallawell, who was kind enough to pick up me up from the airport. It was my first time attending Retromobile, and I was in for a treat. Douglas is a car guy through and through, and picked me up in his Cayman – although I did spot an ‘Morgan drivers give the best rides’ sticker! “It’s a bit cheeky!” Douglas admitted.
We headed straight to the show, which impressed right from the very first stands. Not to downplay the NEC’s Classic Car Show, but in terms of venue, Retromobile beats it hands down. The Porte de Versailles Exhibition Arena is a stunning location. It has the usual large halls, but they differ in shape and are linked by a glass-walled bridge – where the Group B cars were on display. Classy, chic and stylish are words I would use to describe Retromobile, and what else would you expect from the French? They really know how to put on a car show.
With 1920s music drifting around Hall 1, adding to the retro-theme, we found the ‘Morgan Belgium’ stand. Morgan are launching their new Paris dealership, called Beaumont Automobiles, at the show. Beaumont are a sub-dealer of Garage Albert, the Belgium-based dealer. With a fantastic selection of Mogs, including an Aero, Roadster, 3 Wheeler and the rather cute EV3 junior, Garage Albert certainly stood out – even when the adjacent stand had the actual DB5 from Goldfinger!
Plenty more to come in the next issue of MOG, in the meantime, check out our gallery and a short video.
